LEADER OF THE ONTARIO PC PARTY

John Tory shares his thoughts on his role as Leader.

“Not a day goes by that I'm not asked what kind of Premier I will strive to be and how I will govern differently from the current government.

The answer to the first part of the question is simple. As Premier, I will be guided by the same values that have served me so well throughout my life – to keep my word, to work hard for what matters and to be accountable for my actions.

I will strive to talk straight and talk sense because citizens deserve no less from their political leaders. It comes down to a matter of trust – political leaders need to trust their citizens to understand that some problems take time to solve.

I will put a premium on planning because I know from experience that's how you get results and deliver on your commitments. Before you make a promise, you need to make a plan to deliver that promise. I believe people have the right to expect their government to make good plans, not poor excuses – and to hold the government accountable when it fails.

I will make your priorities my priorities. The job of government should be to tackle the big issues – making sure that we have a strong foundation on which to build a caring and prosperous society. So where Dalton McGuinty worries about
re-designing the provincial logo and spending millions on partisan advertising, I will work tirelessly to fix the doctor shortage, eliminate government waste and build a strong economy.

And in all our actions – large and small - I will recognize the diversity that is the heart of Ontario's unique culture.

That's the kind of leader I have always been. That's the kind of Premier I will strive to be.
