“On this Remembrance Day, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of the men and women who have bravely served in the Canadian Armed Forces – and those who continue to serve our country in Afghanistan today.
“Remembrance Day is a day for somber reflection. To remember the brave men and women who have worn our country’s uniform, and given the ultimate sacrifice in defence of Canadian values. It is also a day to recognize our nation’s proud history.
“We are fortunate to live in a peaceful and prosperous country – but when called upon, our country’s fighting spirit is an awe-inspiring force.
“During the world’s darkest hours – when the very future of freedom was in doubt – it was Canadians who answered the call.
“From Vimy Ridge in WWI, to Juno Beach in WWII, defending Seoul during the Korean war, restoring stability in Bosnia or fighting to bring democracy and fight terrorism in Afghanistan today; Canadians have a strong tradition in standing up for what is right.
“Today, we remember the brave soldiers, sailors, air men and women – who fought and sacrificed so much for the Canadian values we all hold dear.
“To me, there is no better way to honour the memory of those who never returned home from war than to pass on their courageous stories to future generations.
“Lest we forget.”
