Tim Hudak Will Help Keep Families Safe From Sexual Predators

NEWS:

LEAMINGTON — Today, Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak was joined by Ontario PC candidate for Chatham – Kent – Essex, Rick Nicholls, to announce his commitment to develop a public website of Ontario’s sex offender registry to help keep Ontario families and children safe.

There are currently more than 14,000 registered sex offenders living in Ontario, but there’s no way for families to know if any of them live in their neighbourhood, near their child’s school, or next to the park where they play. For example, convicted sex offender Sarah Dahle – who is deemed ‘likely to re-offend’ – was recently found living in Leamington next to an elementary school. Last week, she moved to the London area, but families will not be given her exact whereabouts. A Tim Hudak government will provide parents with a website that lists the name and address of every registered sex offender living in Ontario.

On October 6th, Ontario’s families will have a clear choice between Dalton McGuinty – who opposes a public sex offender registry and believes a sex offender’s right to privacy trumps a law-abiding family’s right to safety – or a Tim Hudak government, who will protect hard working families and children against those who would harm us.

QUOTES:

“Under Dalton McGuinty, a sex-offender’s right to privacy trumps a law-abiding family’s safety. An Ontario PC government will ensure the safety of families always comes first.”
–Tim Hudak, Ontario PC Leader

“Ontario moms and dads deserve to know whether a registered sex offender lives in their neighbourhood. We will give them access to more and better information in order to keep their family safe.”
–Tim Hudak, Ontario PC Leader

QUICK FACTS:

  • Provinces and States across North America already have public and searchable sex offender registries, including Alberta, all 50 states, and the U.S. Department of Justice.
  • Under Dalton McGuinty, parents and families are denied the right to access Ontario’s Sex Offenders registry. As a result, parents are unable to find out whether one of the 14,000 registered sex offenders in Ontario is residing in their neighbourhood. A Tim Hudak government will develop an online, public sex offender registry to help keep Ontario families and children safe.
  • A Tim Hudak government will also require sexual predators and other high risk offenders to wear GPS bracelets. Police would be able to monitor sex offenders and, if needed, stop them from entering an area where there could be children, like a school or playground.
